The University of Wisconsin-Superior athletic department has announced an extension to its corporate partnership with local Subway restaurants. Subway has been a corporate partner with Yellowjacket athletics since 2015, and the new agreement extends the partnership through the 2020-21 season.

Among the elements of the agreement is the naming rights to the Stinger Classic volleyball tournament and the Superior Showdown men's hockey tournament.

The Subway Stinger Classic will take place at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Sept. 6-7. The event, which started in the late 1990s, will feature five matches over two days. Participating teams include St. Scholastica, Finlandia, Crown and Nebraska-Wesleyan in addition to UWS.

Later in the year the Superior Showdown, sponsored by Subway, will come to Wessman Arena. The third annual event will take place Dec. 28-29 with games at 3 and 7 p.m. both days. Participants include Marian, who won the inaugural event in 2017 and placed second in 2018, Bethel and Tufts, which will mark the second straight year a team from the East Region has come to town.

"The past few years we've been able to put together a strong slate of tournaments for our teams to host, and securing sponsorships is the next step in the maturity of those events," UWS Athletics Director Bursik said.
