SHS ROUNDUP: Hockey teams lose, basketball games snowed out
The Superior High School hockey teams wrapped up their respective regular seasons with losses Monday, Feb. 11.
The Spartan girls lost to the Hayward Area Hurricanes 4-0 at Wessman Arena, while the SHS boys lost 10-0 to Duluth East at the Heritage Center in Duluth.
Presley Beron had 33 saves for Superior and Emma Quimby stopped eight shots for Hayward (11-9-4).
The Spartans (2-19-2) are the No. 7 seed for the WIAA playoffs and play at No. 2 Hudson (12-9-2) at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14.
The Spartans lost to Hudson 4-3 on Dec. 8, at home.
The winner advances to play either River Falls or Chippewa Falls on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

The Spartans finished the regular season 16-6, their best record since going 15-8-1 in 2012-13.
The 2012-13 Spartans eventually finished 19-9-1 after advancing to the state tournament and losing to Eau Claire Memorial 5-3 in the championship game.
Superior matched East in the opening minutes Monday with each team posting three shots on goal.
But after East scored on the power play at 7:28, it was all Greyhounds after that as they three more times for a 4-0 lead after one period.
East added three goals apiece in the second and third periods to improve to 15-6-2.
Dayton Podvin stopped 14 shots in the first period for Superior and Jamin Durfee had 21 saves over the final two periods.
Lukan Hanson stopped 10 shots for East.
The Spartans are the No. 1 seed for the upcoming WIAA tournament and will play No. 9 Barron Co-op (Northwest Icemen), which defeated No. 8 Menomonie 6-5 on Monday, Feb. 11.
The Icemen are 12-9-1 on the season, which included early-season wins over New Richmond (5-3) and Rice Lake (3-2) and a tie with Somerset (1-1). They ended the regular season with a 9-0 loss at Hayward on Feb. 9.
Wyatt Boe (14 goals, 20 assists) and Colton Avery (17-17) lead the Icemen in scoring with 34 points apiece. Timothy Mirabal is next with 11 goals and 17 assists.

The Spartans’ home game with Rice Lake was postponed Tuesday, Feb. 12, and will hopefully be made up at a later date.
The Spartans play next at Proctor at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14. They will then host Hudson at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, and Menomonie at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
A SHS girls playoff game will follow the boys game with Menomonie.
The Spartans' game at Eau Claire North Tuesday was snowed out and will not be made up.
Superior now plays at Duluth Denfeld Wednesday, Feb. 13, and hosts Virginia Thursday, Feb. 14, and Chisago Lakes Saturday, Feb. 16. Wednesday's and Thursday's games are at 7:15 p.m. and Saturday's is at 3:15 p.m.
