SPARTAN RDP: Chippewa Falls skates past SHS girls

The Chippewa Falls/Menomonie Cardinals defeated the Superior High School girls hockey team 3-1 on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Superior Ice Arena.

The Cardinals scored a goal in each period, while Rose Ion scored for the Spartans on a power play in the second period with assists from Brooklyn Burger and Arika Trentor.

The Spartans outshot the Cardinals 29-22, with Presley Beron stopping 19 shots for Superior and Haley Frank 28 for CFM.

The Spartans wrap up the regular season by hosting North Shore at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Superior Ice Arena, and Hayward at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Wessman Arena.

SPARTAN SPIN: Superior/Northwestern is the No. 7 seed for the WIAA playoffs and play at No. 2 Hudson, also Feb. 14.

Boys swimming

The Spartans finished fifth in the Big Rivers Conference Championships on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Hudson.

The host Raiders finished first with 673.5 points. Superior had 169 points.

Logan Jelinek was Superior’s top finisher, placing sixth in the diving event.

The relay of Andrew Lisak, Ben Hintzman, Mike Barnaby and Nate Peterson finished eighth in the 200 free relay.

Up next for the Spartans are the WIAA sectionals at Hudson. The diving competition is at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, while the swimming events begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.

Wrestling

The Spartans finished in eighth place in the Heart O’ North Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 2, in Chetek.

Spooner won the team title with 191 points.

The Spartans finished with 95 points, led by Caden Stone’s second-place finish at 152 pounds.

Stone improved to 33-4 on the season, received a bye and defeated Hayward’s Dustin Stone before losing to Barron’s Tristan Massie in the title match.

Up next for Superior is the WIAA regional tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Chippewa Falls.

The top four finishers in each weight division qualify for sectionals Feb. 16 at Menomonie.
