Spartans rally past Baldwin-Woodville
The Superior High School boys hockey team needed a three-goal third period to defeat the Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks 4-2 Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Wessman Arena.
The Blackhawks recorded the first shot goal seconds into the game, but the Spartans responded with the next 13 shots and eventually took a 1-0 lead on Ian Johnson's goal with 1:20 remaining in the opening period.
After taking passes from Taylor Burger and Jakob Holmlund, Johnson broke in alone and flipped the puck over Baldwin-Woodville goaltender Zach Bishop.
The Blackhawks scored the only two goals of the second period, both on rebounds.
They tied it up at 4:19 when Alex Bishop put home a rebound with an assist from Jake Carlson, then took a 2-1 lead when Carlson jamned the puck between Spartan goaltender Dayton Podvin and the right post after a save on a shot by Parker Rens.
The Spartans stormed back in the third period, with a pair of Taylor Burger goals sandwiching a Max Curtis goal.
Burger tied it up when he stuffed the puck just inside the left post with assists from Trevor Dalbec and Derrick Mattson.
The Spartans took a 3-2 lead on Curtis' blast from the left point, then sealed the victory when Burger scored into an empty net with 39 seconds remaining.
Podvin had 16 saves for Superior (13-2) and Zach Bishop stopped 35 shots for Baldwin-Woodville (11-4-1).
