Spartans snap six-game skid against Hilltoppers
Cayden Laurvick’s fourth hat trick of the season led the Superior High School boys hockey team past the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers 5-2 on Thursday, Jan. 3, at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth.
With the Spartans trailing 1-0, Laurvick assisted on Gunnar Hansen’s goal then scored three of the next four in the Lake Superior Conference victory.
Spencer Gudowski also scored for Superior (13-2 overall, 3-0 LSC).
The win also snapped Superior’s six-game winless streak to the Hilltoppers (the teams skated to a 2-2 tie on Jan. 5, 2017). The Spartans’ last win over Marshall was 2-1 in the consolation championship game of the Hilltopper Classic on Dec. 28, 2013.
Hansen also had two assists for Superior and Dayton Podvin finished with 28 saves.
Carter Sullivan and Xavier McNulty scored for the Hilltoppers (0-2) and Alex Busick finished with 18 saves.
Superior hosts Baldwin-Woodville (11-3) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, and plays at Eau Claire North (8-5-1, 5-0 BRC) at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.
