The Superior High School girls hockey team finished in second place in the Culver’s Cup this weekend in Madison.

The Spartan, who entered the tournament with a record of 0-10, defeated Brookfield 6-3 on Thursday, Dec. 27 and the Metro (Middleton) Lynx 3-2 on Friday, Dec. 28, before losing to the St. Croix Valley Fusion 6-0 in the championship game on Saturday, Dec. 29.

Amber DeLong scored three of the Fusion goals as they improved to 8-3 on the season.

Presley Beron stopped 17 shots for Superior and Sydney Selley finished with 12 saves for the Fusion.

The Spartans opened the tournament by winning a battle of winless teams with the Brookfield Glacier.

Lucy Drougas scored a second-period hat trick for Superior; Arika Trentor scored twice in the first period; and Brooklyn Burger scored into an empty net with 52 seconds remaining.

Barron was the winning goaltender with 27 saves. Kristin Woodcock had 42 saves for Brookfield (1-12).

In Friday’s overtime win over the Metro Lynx, Burger scored the game-winner 5:05 into overtime with assists from Trentor and Destiny Holmes.

Trentor also scored a goal and assisted on Drougas’ goal, along with Isabel Franta.

Beron finished with 29 saves for the Spartans, who will get another crack at the Fusion when they come to the Superior Ice Arena for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 5.

Boys basketball

The Spartans went 1-1 in the Tartan (Minn.) Tournament this week in Oakdale, Minn.

The Spartans opened with a 71-52 win over Chisago Lakes on Thursday, Dec. 27, but then lost to White Bear Lake 64-61 in the Blue Division championship game Friday, Dec. 28.

Xavier Patterson led Superior in scoring both games, including 18 against White Bear Lake and 22 against Chisago Lakes.

Also against White Bear Lake, Ben Rhodes added 13 points and Beau Severson had 11.

Jeremy Beckler led White Bear Lake (9-0) with 19 points.

In the win over Chisago Lakes, Severson added 14 points and Rhodes had 10.

The Spartans (4-3) host Hermantown at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5.

Girls hoops

The Spartans went 1-1 at the Rhinelander Holiday Tournament, losing to Wisconsin Rapids 55-46 on Friday and beating the host Hodags 53-48 Saturday.

Niya Wilson scored 20 points in the loss to Wisconsin Rapids. Chloe Kintop was next with 10 points and Lauren Raboin had nine.

The Spartans are off until playing at Chippewa Falls on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
