The Superior High School Athletic Department handed out its yearly awards Wednesday night and Kesley Hansen and Jack Bergum were double winners.
Hansen and Bergum were this year's SHS WIAA scholar athletes, while Bergum was the Frank Cirilli Scholar Athlete and Hansen and Catherine Albrecht shared this year's Frank Cirilli Scholar Athletes for females.
Nolan Holcombe was named the Packy Paquette Male Athlete of the Year and Raya Kosey was named the Spartan Female Athlete of the year.
The Frank Cirilli Scholar athlete awards are given to the seniors with the most success academically and athletically.
The Spartan Female and Packy Paquette Male Athlete of the Year awards are given to the senior with the most athletic accomplishments and recognition.

The Packy Paquette award is named after former SSHS standout athlete Packy Paquette, who was killed in a car accident his sophomore year while attending the University of Minnesota.
Kelsey Hansen
Hansen earned 12 varsity letters, including four each in swimming, hockey and soccer.
She earned all-conference honors her freshman year in the 200 free relay; her sophomore year in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay; her junior year in the 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle relay and in her senior year 100 freestyle, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.
Hansen was conference champion in the 200 freestyle relay her freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year; 100 freestyle her sophomore junior and senior year, 200 medley relay her sophomore and senior year, 200 freestyle relay her sophomore, junior and senior year and 400 freestyle relay her senior year.
She was rookie of the year her freshman year, most improved her sophomore year, swimmer of the year her junior year and honorable mention swimmer of the year her senior year. She was a captain her junior and senior year and helped lead the SHS girls swim and dive team to conference championships her sophomore, junior and senior years.
She leaves the SHS girls swim program holding records for the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
In hockey Hansen earned the coaches award her sophomore and junior years and was assistant captain her senior year.

In soccer she was most valuable player her sophomore year, all-conference honorable mention her junior year and captain her junior and senior year.
Academically Kelsey has a 3.875 GPA, scored a 27 on the ACT, has taken 10 AP or accelerated classes and is the National Honor Society President. Kelsey plans to attend Augsburg College next year and study either biology or chemistry and participate on the Augsburg swim team.
Catherine Albrecht
Albrecht has earned 11 varsity letters, four in cross country and soccer and three in dance.
In soccer she was all-conference all four years, captain her junior and senior year, MVP her freshman year, most improved her sophomore and junior years and teammate of the year her senior year. She also helped the girls cross country team win their first ever conference team championship her junior year and repeat as conference champions her senior year.
In dance Albrecht was all-conference and captain her senior year and helped lead her team to state with second-place finish in the kick division in her sophomore year and fourth-place finishes her junior and senior years. She also helped the SHS dance team win their first ever conference title her junior year.
In soccer she was all-conference, team MVP and defensive player of the year her junior year and captain her junior and senior year.
Academically Albrecht has a 3.91 GPA, scored a 31 on the ACT, taken eight AP or accelerated classes, earned the AP Scholar Award and is a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to attend Marquette University in the fall and major in civil engineering.

Jack Bergum
Bergum has earned nine varsity letters. In football he lettered three years and was honorable mention all-conference and a captain his senior year. In hockey he earned two varsity letters and in track he earned 4 varsity letters.
Academically Bergum has a 3.9 GPA, scored a 32 on the ACT and has taken 11 AP or accelerated classes. He has earned the AP Scholar Award as well as SHS Academic Awards in mathematics and history. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and plans to attend the University of Oklahoma in the fall to study pre-law.
Nolan Holcombe
Holcombe has earned nine varsity letters, three in football and hockey, two in golf and one in baseball.
In football, he was a captain his senior year and earned the Spartan Award his junior year and Character Award his senior year. During his junior year in hockey he was honorable mention all-conference and all-state and a Hobey Baker Award winner. His senior year he was a captain, second-team all-conference and honorable mention all-state and played on the Duluth All-Star team. He was also awarded the most dedicated award by the team.
In the spring, Holcombe lettered in baseball his sophomore year and then switched to golf were he lettered his junior and senior years. He was the low medalist at the Cloquet Golf Invitational his senior year and today helped the SHS golf team advance to sectionals by claiming the WIAA regional team championship.
Holcombe hopes to play junior hockey next year or attend Gustavus University.

Raya Kosey
Kosey has earned 12 varsity letters, four each in tennis, basketball and track.
In tennis she was the most improved player her freshman year, team MVP her junior year, captain her junior and senior year and Osceola Tournament No. 2 singles champion her senior year.
In basketball she was defensive MVP her sophomore and junior years and captain her junior and senior years. She set the school record for most assists in a game her junior year and was second-team all-conference and Superior Telegram All-Area team selections her senior year. She helped the SHS girls basketball team win conference titles her junior and senior year and a regional championship her junior year.
In track Kosey was team MVP her freshman and junior years, earned the Spartan Iron women award her sophomore year and was team captain her junior and senior year.
She earned all-conference honors in the 100, 200 and 400 her freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years; and long jump her junior and senior years. She was conference champion in the long jump her junior and senior year and the 200 and 400 her senior year. In her sophomore year she helped the SHS girls track team win their first conference championship.
She was a WIAA sectional qualifier her freshman year in the 200, 400 and 4x400 relay; her sophomore year in the 100, 200 and 400; her junior year in the long jump and 400; and her senior year in the 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay and 400. She claimed regional championships in the 400 her freshman, sophomore and junior years and in the 4x400 relay her senior year.
She qualified for state her freshman year in the 400 and 4x400 relay; her sophomore year in the 400; and her junior year in the 400 and long jump.

Kosey holds the 400 record at the ER Mullins Invite and UW-Superior's Lydia S. Thering Fieldhouse and leaves the SHS track program holding four school records (4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, 200 and 400). She is also the only SHS female track athlete to ever run a 400 under 60 seconds with her school record run of 58.24 seconds.
Kosey plans to attend the University of Minnesota State-Mankato in the fall on a track scholarship and study in the field of criminal justice.
