Two members of the Northwestern High School girls golf team were named Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin Academic All-State honorees for the 2019 season.

Honored were juniors Claire Jarman and McKenzie Tuura.

Students are nominated by GCAW member coaches if they meet the following criteria: 1. A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25; 2. participation in at least 75% of their team’s varsity matches; and 3. are at least a sophomore in high school.

The Tigers wrapped up the regular season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-16) loss at Bloomer on Thursday, Oct. 17.

The Blackhawks (28-8) clinched the Heart O’ North Conference with a perfect 8-0 record. Northwestern falls to 11-24 and 4-4.

“Bloomer is a very good team,” NHS coach Charlie Hessel said. “They gave us some opportunities in the first set with missed serves, but we didn’t fully capitalize on their errors. If you don’t do that, they are tough to beat.”

The Tigers were led by Brynn Erickson, seven kills; Allison Luoma and Brooke Ogren, four kills apiece; and Tayva Plasch, 17 set assists.

The Tigers are the No. 12 seed for the WIAA Division 2 tournament and play at No. 5 Ashland at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The winner plays either No. 13 Somerset or No. 4 St.Croix Central on Thursday, Oct. 24.
