Keely Morehouse, Lily Walrath and Emma Cooper, all sophomores on the Superior High School girls golf team, were named to the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin Academic All-State team for the 2019 season.
Students are nominated by GCAW member coaches if they meet the following criteria: 1. A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25; 2. participation in at least 75% of their team’s varsity matches; and 3. are at least a sophomore in high school.
The season came to an end for the Spartans with a 5-2 loss to Wausau West in a WIAA Division 1 playoff game Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Wausau.
Trailing 3-0 just 20 minutes into the game, the Spartans rallied and got within 3-2 at the half on the strength of two Jakob Kidd goals.
The Warriors (13-1-2) added a pair of second-half goals to win the game and advance to play at No 2 Hudson on Saturday, Oct. 26. The Raiders advanced with am 8-0 win over Chippewa Falls.
Superior’s season ends with a 13-5 record.
The Spartans wrapped up the regular season with a 1-0 loss to Washburn/Bayfield/South Shore Thursday, Oct. 17, at Washburn.
Tanner Swanson finished with three saves for the Spartans.
The Spartans played a WIAA D1 playoff game at New Richmond on Thursday, Oct. 24.
The winner will play at No. 1 River Falls on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The Division 1 sectional meet for the Spartans is at the New Richmond Paperjack Elementary School at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
The first two teams and first five individuals who are not members of a qualifying team advances to the state meet Saturday, Nov. 2, at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
