The Superior High School girls golf team improved to 5-1 in the Heart O’ North Conference with a 3-1 record late last week.
The Spartans picked up two wins Thursday, Aug. 29, in Frederic with a score of 209. Chetek carded 256 and Luck didn’t have a team score because of a lack of golfers.
“The 209 was a huge improvement over the day before in Spooner,” SHS coach Ed Willie said. “Emma Cooper shot a career-best 50, even though she was in the sand on four straight holes. She was steady and cool as ever.”
Also for the Spartans, Keely Morehouse shot a 53; Lily Walrath shot a career-best 54; Haley Zembo carded a 52 in her first varsity action.
“Haley parred the first hole and was off and running with a career-best score,” Willie said.
The Spartans also split a pair of HON matches Wednesday at Spooner.
The host Rails won both of their matches with a team score of 214, followed by Superior, 228; and Barron, 232.
Morehouse led Superior with a career-best round of 46. Other SHS scores were Walrath, 58; and Cooper, Niya Wilson and Kendall Callery, all with 62s.
Zembo carded a career-best 56 in JV action for the Spartans. Lauren Verdoljak was next at 70.
“Keely continues to play great golf, shooting a career-best score on a nine that she's not familiar with,” Willie said.
The Spartans will be at Ladysmith on Tuesday, Sept. 10, and then host the Nemadji Invitational on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
SPARTAN SPIN: In JV action at Frederic, Callery and Emma Raye shot 58s; Verdoljak improved by 10 strokes from the day before with a 60; and Emma Winnberg shot 72.
The Spartans lost to Duluth East 6-1 Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Laura MacArthur Elementary courts in Duluth.
Superior also played Duluth Denfeld, but results were not available from that match.
Clara Lundholm and Emma Eibon picked up Superior’s lone win at No. 3 doubles with a 7-5, 2-6, 11-9 victory over East’s Ella McCarthy and Cici Stender.
The Spartans are at Duluth Denfeld Tuesday, Sept. 3, and host Hermantown Thursday, Sept. 5. Both Lake Superior Conference matches begin at 4:15 p.m.
