The Superior High School boys golf team is in second place after the first leg of the Lake Superior Conference Championships Wednesday, May 8, at Cloquet.

Cloquet is in first place with a team total score of 301, followed by the Spartans, 344; and Ashland, 361.

Individually, Cloquet's Sam Baker finished in first place twice Wednesday with rounds of 36 and 35, which puts him in first place with 28 points.

Hermantown's Steven Kragseth is in second place with 23 points after rounds of 37 and 38; and Cloquet's Keegan Poppenberg is second with 20 points on rounds of 41 and 37.

T.J. Sitek was Superior's low golfer Wednesday with an 18-hole score of 83. His 39 on the second round tied for eighth place and earned him seven conference points.

Grant Sorensen picked up four LSC points for his 42 on the first round and then one point for a 42 on the second nine.

Other Spartan scores were Taylor Burger, 43-44-87; Matt Nault, 51-43-94; Jamin Durfee; 47-48-95; and Dayton Podvin 47-49-96.

The final 18 holes of the championships are at noon on Wednesday, May 15, at the Nemadji Golf Course.

Prior to playing at Nemadji, the Spartans will compete in the Virginia Invitational at 11 a.m. Friday and the Eau Claire Memorial Invitational at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 14.

 

Track and field

The Spartan boys finished in first place and the girls second at Virginia on Tuesday, May 7.

 

The SHS boys finished with 121 points and Ely was second with 103 points.

Ely won the girls team title with 77 points. Superior was third with 59.50 points.

The Spartan boys won 11 events, including all four relays.

Carter Fonger won the 100-meter dash, Steven Pearson won the 200 and both joined Noah Benson and Jake Holmlund on the winning 4x100 relay and Brennan Morrissey and Benson on the 4x200 relay.

Nathan Anderson won both hurdle events (110 and 300); Iain Matheson won the 400 and high jump; and Morrissey won the pole vault.

Mathison, Jarrett Gronski, Benson and Morrissey won the 4x400 relay.

The Spartan girls won three events - Adrianne Krueger, 100 hurdles; Marcia Mogensen, 300 hurdles; and Maggie Stengernberger, pole vault.
