SPARTAN ROUNDUP: Golfers sixth at Miller Invite

Led by Taylor Burger’s sixth-place finish, the Superior High School boys golf team finished in sixth place in the 23-team Scott Miller Invitational, hosted by Hayward High School.

Superior carded 334 on Friday, May 3, at Hayward Golf and Country Club and 229 on Saturday, May 5, at Big Fish Golf Course for a final score of 633.

Burger, who tied with Max Savaloga of Eau Claire Memorial, finished a final score of 154 (72-82).

Other Spartan scores were: 34. TJ Sitek (88-80—168); 43. Matt Nault (87-84—171); 44. Grant Sorenson (87-85—172); and 54. Dayton Podvin (92-83—175).

Rice Lake’s Simon Cuskey topped the 120-player field with a two-day score of 147 (72-75) and ECM won the team title (619).

Baseball

Superior tasted defeated for just the second time this season with an 11-1, five-inning loss to Duluth Marshall on Thursday, May 2, at Wade Stadium.

The Spartans then split a doubleheader Saturday, May 4, at Menomonie, winning the opener 8-3 and losing game two 4-1.

The Spartans’ run against the Hilltoppers came in the fifth inning as Jason Samarziya led off with a single and scored on Ben Rhodes’ two-out single.

That loss dropped Superior to 2-1 in the Lake Superior Conference.

Marshall (7-1, 3-0 LSC) was led by Charlie Kleinschmidt, 3-for-3 with a triple, double and three RBIs; and Peter Hansen, 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Carter Sullivan was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and a run over five innings.

Joe Barker, Mason Stenberg, David Fender and Austin LeJeune pitched for the Spartans, allowing 10 hits with four strikeouts and five walks.

The Spartans’ overall record went to 8-3 with its split at Menomonie.

Superior scored all the runs it needed in its win in a four-run first inning.

Rhodes was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits, one strikeout and one walk in the first three innings.

Stenberg also pitched three scoreless inning with two strikeouts and one walk; and David Fender walked a batter in a scoreless seventh inning.

Superior outhit Menomonie 9-3.

Riley Rehnstrand was 2-for-4, including a two-run single in the first inning; Will Schorr added an RBI triple; Gunnar Hansen had two hits and scored two runs; Barker had an RBI single.

Zach DeMarce doubled and Kale Miller had an RBI single for the Mustangs.

The Spartans’ run in game two came on Sean McCoshen’s fourth-inning sac fly that scored Derek Fender, who doubled.

Menomonie pitchers retired the Spartans in order over the final three innings.

The Spartans also got a double from Hansen and singles from McCoshen and Blake Arnovich.

Barker, David Fender and Hansen pitched for the Spartans, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Briggs Richartz doubled, singled and had two RBIs for Menomonie.

Superior hosts Proctor at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, and Eau Claire Memorial for two games at noon Saturday, May 11.

SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV defeated Duluth Marshall 10-3. Max Reed, Jonny Rhodes and Tucker Johnson pitched for the Spartans, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Kell Piggott had two doubles while Ethan Raye had a double and single.  Also getting hits were Reed, Johnson, Rhodes, Jake Edwards and Jake Kidd. … The SHS JV also swept Menomonie, 15-5 and 16-5. LeJeune and Carter Leif pitched in game one, allowing six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The Spartans had 11 hits. Reed and Ethan Raye each had three hits, while Piggott and Tucker Johnson had two apiece. Jake Edwards, Tristan Brennen and Keegan Tribbey had one each. Edwards and Ross Rivord pitched in game two, allowing nine hits with six strikeouts and four walks. The Spartans had 15 hits, including three apiece from Carter Kalin and Piggot. Reed, Raye and Brennen each had two hits, while Leif, Johnson and Austin Ward had one each. The Spartan JV if 8-1 on the season.

Girls soccer

Superior lost at Rice Lake 6-2 on Thursday, May 2.

The Spartans host Eau Claire North on Tuesday, May 7, and Eau Claire Memorial on Thursday, May 9. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

Track and field

The Spartans competed in the Esko Showcase on Saturday, May 4, with the boys finishing second and the girls third.

Marcia Mogensen won the 300 hurdles and long jump Superior. Other SHS winners were Sasha Peterson (1,600), Shannon McCoshen (3,200), Haley Olson (pole vault), and 1,600 sprint medley.

Winning for the Superior boys were Jake Holmlund (200), Jackson Karren (3,200), Isaac Domitrovich (110 hurdles), Anderson-Harkreader (300 hurdles) and Brennan Morrissey (pole vault). The Spartans also won the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and the 1,600 sprint medley.
