DULUTH - Grandma’s Marathon weekend kicked off Friday night with the William A. Irvin 5K ― the first of three races scheduled for the 41st annual Grandma’s Marathon Weekend.
This is the second year raced on the scenic William A. Irvin 5K course.
Dustin Franta of Portland, Ore., won the 3.1-mile race with a time of 15:34, setting a new course record previously held by Blake Anderson (16:09).
Second place went to Declan Dahlberg of North Oaks, Minn., with a time of 16:19. Dahlberg took second place in 2016 with a time of 16:36.

In the women’s division, Carrie Tollefson of St. Paul took the title with a time of 17:55. Tollefson came in third place in 2016.
Superior’s Troy Lambert and Sarah Anderson were the fastest local male and female runners. Lambert had a time of 19:35 and Sarah Anderson covered the course in 23:16.
A record number 2,334 registered for the annual event with 1,849 finishing the race, 710 men and 1,139 women. For complete results, visit www.mtecresults.com .
The 27th annual Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and 41st annual Grandma’s Marathon are at 6:15 and 7:45 a.m. Saturday, respectively.
A field of 8,893 is registered for the half marathon, while 8,727 are signed up for the full marathon. In all, nearly 19,000 are signed up to participate in the three-race weekend.
