CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Former St. Scholastica men's hockey player Jordan Chong was named the Southern Professional Hockey League's Co-Rookie of the Year.
Chong, who plays for the Pensacola Ice Flyers, tied for the lead in assists by a rookie (33), was second in both points (54) and power-play goals (9), while his 21 goals ranked third among first-year players. This is the first time in league history there was a tie in balloting for a post-season award winner.
At St. Scholastica, Chong tied the program record with 12 career game-winning goals and was second with five career short-handed goals. During his senior season he led the team with 17 goals and 20 assists.
His 37 points during the 2009-10 season were the most by a CSS player since the 1998-99 campaign. For his efforts, Chong was first team American Hockey Coaches Association West Region All-American and a first team West Region USCHO All-Star. He is the only Saint to earn first team USCHO All-Star honors. Chong was also a first team All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association that year.
Chong played for the Saints from 2006-10 and recorded 46 goals and 44 assists for a total of 90 points. He was named the team's Most Valuable Player and Best Offensive Player in 2010. He was also the team's Rookie of the Year in 2007 and was a two-year assistant captain and team captain his senior season.
