Hermantown emerged victorious from a physical battle with Grand Rapids on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021, evening its record with a 35-14 win at Corey Veech Field at Centricity Stadium.

Beau Janzig gave the Hawks a lead on his 13-yard run-after-the catch midway through the first quarter before a second-quarter strike of 54 yards from Mike Lau to Peyton Menzel doubled the lead. Gavin Blomdahl tacked on a 2-point conversion to open his significant contribution to the scoreboard. He scored the first of his three touchdowns, from 16 yards, before the break to make it 21-6 at halftime, then rumbled in from 1 and 3 yards for the Hawks' second-half scoring.

Grand Rapids (1-1) had three turnovers and had to use three quarterbacks. Sophomore Devin Kinkel connected with Dan Wohlers over 25 yards to get the Thunderhawks on the board late in the first half, and Jack Cleveland had a consolation score from a yard out in the fourth quarter.

Lau threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns for Hermantown, which is at Duluth East in Week 3. Grand Rapids is at Cloquet.

Alec Turnbull threw three touchdown passes and ran in a score as well in a game the Lumberjacks led 15-0 at halftime.

Reese Sheldon scored three touchdowns for Cloquet in three ways — he caught a TD pass, threw a TD pass and ran a score in.

Alexander Peterson had two TD receptions for the Lumberjacks, catching one from Turnbull and another from Sheldon.

After a powerful offensive performance in Week 1, the Giants reached 2-0 on the strength of their defense, blanking the Rangers in Aurora.

Cooper Levander broke the first-half deadlock with an 8-yard touchdown run in the second quarter before the Giants doubled their lead in the third quarter on a blocked punt Jack Ribich landed on in the end zone.

Ethan Murray added a 4-yard run to complete the scoring for Mesabi East, which won its first game 46-36 vs. Braham.

Junior running back Andrew Trandahl rushed 23 times for 304 yards and four touchdowns to lead New Richmond to a 42-28 Big Rivers Conference home victory over Superior.

Trandahl scored on runs of 68, 7, 64 and 35 yards for the Tigers (4-0 overall, 2-0 Big Rivers), while teammate Drew Effertz blocked a kick return for a touchdown.

Ross Rivord rushed 12 times for 68 yards and three scores while Jordan Goldfine added eight carries for 80 yards to lead the Spartans (1-3, 1-1).

The Greyhounds chased the game to within a point in the fourth quarter before the Vikings won going away Friday in North Branch.

East (1-1) was down 14-0 early and rallied to within a missed extra point of tying it up early in the fourth quarter but the host Vikings scored three times in the last frame.

Ashton LaBelle had three touchdown runs for North Branch, which forced four East turnovers.

Chisholm couldn’t stop North Woods’ TJ Chiabotti, who scored seven touchdowns, six in the first half of the Northeast Silver division contest.

Chiabotti opened the scoring with a 58-yard interception return, then had touchdown runs of 35, 16, 21, 10 and 20 yards plus a 25-yard reception from Ty Fabish. He ran for 306 yards on 20 carries.

Jude Sundquist had two TD catches and a kickoff return score for the Bluestreaks (1-1), finishing with 120 yards on four catches.
