Jack Martens had a touchdown running and receiving to lead Cumberland to a 28-0 home victory over Northwestern Friday night in a battle of Heart O’ North Conference unbeatens.
Yards were hard to come by in this one, with the teams combining for just 350 yards, with the Beavers (4-0) holding a 219-131 advantage.
Martens finished with 13 carries for 51 yards, while teammate Sam Schradle added 12 carries for 64 yards and another score.
Cumberland got just enough passing to help move the chains, with quarterback Maddux Allen finishing 9-for-14 passing for 79 yards and the TD to Martens. Martens also had a 14-yard pass completion, and Isaac Runstrom led the defensive effort by returning a fumble 42 yards for a touchdown to open the second-half scoring.
Colin Trautt and Greg Ohman had 39 rushing yards apiece to lead the Tigers (3-1) but it took a combined 22 carries. Northwestern, which had three turnovers on two fumbles and an interception, hadn’t been shut out since a 35-0 state quarterfinal loss last season to Stratford.
