The Northwestern High School football team improved to 3-0 overall and in the Heart O' North Conference with a 42-0 win at Ladysmith on Friday, Sept. 6.

It was the second straight shutout for the Tigers, who also shutout Hayward 49-0 on Aug. 30.

Northwestern held Ladysmith to just 122 yards, including 57 rushing.

On the other side of the ball, the Tigers piled up 357 yards, including 288 rushing.

Bryson Mazur led the way with 129 yards on five carries, which included TD runs of 59 and 4 yards.

Quarterback Jake Brill was next with 48 yards rushing. He also completed 6-of-11 passes for 69 yards, including a 9-yard scoring pass to Isaac Nichols.

“The defense impressed again on Friday night,” NHS coach Jovin Kroll said. “We have had a really difficult time preventing the big play against Ladysmith the last few years, and the players really focused on staying true to their keys to prevent that from happening this year.

“Offensively, we came out a little slow, but made a few adjustments early and hit some big plays. The two-minute drill before the half was really well run by the offense, and in the second quarter, in which we scored three touchdowns, we were 60/40 pass vs. run, which will be a continued emphasis for our offense this year.”

After Mazur gave the Tigers to a 14-0 lead with his two scores, Brill ran in from 23 yards and followed with his TD pass to Nichols making the halftime score 28-0.

Colin Trautt’s 14-yard TD run put the game into running time 18 seconds into the third quarter and Nichols completed the scoring with 3-yard run.

Nichols also kicked all six extra-point kicks.

The Tigers host Cumberland at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13.
