The Superior High School football team won its ninth straight season-opener with a 42-6 win over the Somerset Spartans Friday, Aug. 23, in Somerset.

The visiting Spartans didn’t waste any time as they scored two touchdowns just six plays into the game and eventually led 28-0 after one quarter.

Brennan Morrissey scored from 30 yards on Superior’s third play from scrimmage, and, after Somerset fumbled on its first play, two plays later Jarrett Gronski ran in from 35 yards out for a quick 14-0 lead.

Gronski added a 39-yard TD run, Kaden Kimmes threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Brady Herbst, and freshman kicker Carson Gotelaere kicked four extra points to complete the first-quarter scoring spree.

Somerset avoided being shut out when Beaudee Smith scored from 2 yards out with 11:14 remaining.

Superior finished the scoring with a Kimmes 3-yard TD run with 2:31 remaining.

Gotelaere was 6-for-6 on extra points for the Spartans, who defeated Somerset for the third year in a row.
