The Superior High School football team saw its season come to an end with a 33-21 loss to the Rice Lake Warriors on Friday, Oct. 12, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Knowing they needed a win for a chance to make the WIAA playoffs, the Spartans (4-5 overall, 2-5 Big Rivers Conference) played toe-to-toe with the Warriors (7-2, 5-2) through the first quarter.

Rice Lake took a 6-0 lead on its second play from scrimmage when DeAirus Clerveaux ran 57 yards untouched for the score.

But, Superior blocked the extra-point attempt and then took a 7-6 lead on its next possession as Conner Fonger scored from 5 yards out and Nate Peterson’s extra-point kick with 3:35 left in the opening quarter.

Rice Lake quarterback Peyton Buckley had a hand in all three Warrior touchdowns in the second quarter. He ran in from 1 and 50 yards and threw a 5-yard TD pass to C. Clerveaux. Marquez Clerveaux scored the 2-point conversion giving Rice Lake a 26-7 lead at the half.

Superior recovered it second on-side kick of the game to start the second half, which set up Caden Stone’s 38-yard TD run. Jarrett Gronski scored on the two-point conversion to get the Spartans within 26-15.

That would be as close as the Spartans would get as each team scored once in the fourth quarter - Rice Lake’s Robert Hush from 3 yards and Gronski from 6.

Gronski led the Spartans with 122 yards rushing on 29 carries. He also completed 4-of-9 passes for 34 yards.

Trevor Dalbec was in on a team-high 14 tackles for Superior. Gabe Sexton was in on 10 tackles and Brady Herbst, Summerfield and Drew DeBruyne all had eight tackles.

Rice Lake’s balanced offense was led by Torien Hubbard, 104 yards; Peyton Buckley, 89 yards; and DeAirus Clerveaux, 78 yards.
