Superior Senior High School’s Dan Stack was an easy winner as he opened his season in the Class A division of the Proctor Invitational Cross Country Meet. He covered the 3-mile course in 16 minutes and one second to win by 30 seconds. The Spartans finished eighth with 171 points. The meet was won by International Falls with 60 points. Other Spartan placers were Bill Shoemaker, 27th in 17:59; Tim McNaughton, 43rd in 18:42; Jeff Volmer, 47th in 19:01; and Jim Rink, 53rd in 19:49. Running back Gary Staurseth was named the offensive player of the week and defensive honors went to tackle John Phillips as a result of last week's 10-6 loss by the Northwestern Tigers to the Barron Bears football team. Staurseth gained 123 yards in 19 carries for ther Tigers and Phillips led the defense with 13 tackles. (1977)

The UW-Superior football team snapped a 22-game losing streak with a 24-7 win over Bemidji State. It happened on three TD passes from veteran QB Steve Hendry -- 6 yards to TE Pat Hardy; 11 yards to WR Steve DesMarais; and 29 yards to HB Fred McLelland. Rob Olton set a UWS record with a 53-yard field goal. He also converted on three extra-point kicks. (1982)
