Superior High School’s Oscar Flaherty finished in sixth place in the 220-pound weight class at the WIAA State Wrestling Championships this weekend at the Kohl Center in Madison.

On Thursday the senior pinned Anthony Balch of Green Bay Preble in 3:20 and won an 8-5 decision over Reed Ryan of Waunakee.

A 6-5 loss to Andrew Salemme of Marquette University in Friday’s semifinal, sent Flaherty to the third-place bracket where he was pinned by Jacob Somlai of Brookfield Central in 36 seconds and Ryan in 4:52.

Flaherty finished the season with an overall record of 40-5.

“Oscar had a great season and an outstanding career as a Spartan wrestler,” SHS coach Bob Coleman said. “Placing sixth in the state is a rough road to travel and he did it well. He was one point from being in the finals - that tells you just how tough it is at the state meet - one point separates the finals and sixth place.”

Flaherty was 40-5 this season, including 26 points, and ends his prep career with 118 wins.

“I’m very proud of what he has done this season and of course he could not have made it to this point without his teammates,” Coleman said. “He has had a number of guys invest in him this season and push him everyday in practice.”
