Evergreen boys improve to 7-1; girls win conference opener

The Northwood baseball team played its first Central Lakeland Conference game Thursday at Minong. The Evergreens defeated Clear Lake 7-1 behind a strong pitching performance from Reese Stariha.

The Northwood baseball team played its first Central Lakeland Conference game Thursday at Minong. The Evergreens defeated Clear Lake 7-1 behind a strong pitching performance from Reese Stariha.

Stariha pitched a no-hitter in seven innings. He struck out 16 and walked none, facing the minimum number of batters through six innings.

Clear Lake scored its only run in the seventh when Scott Lee reached base on an error. He then scored on a throwing error.

For the Evergreens, Sam Radzak, Tanner Tate and Brad Ross all went 2-for-3. Tate and Ross had two doubles each.

The Evergreens hosted a wooden bat tournament Saturday, facing Birchwood in the morning and Glenwood City in the afternoon.

"The wooden bat tournament was a big hit," Northwood coach Brian Olson said.

Northwood ended up taking the title in its own tournament, defeating Birchwood 10-0 in the first game and Glenwood City 8-3 in the final game

On Monday, the Evergreens hosted Luck in a non-conference game, winning 5-4.

Stariha was again the starting pitcher for Northwood and went five innings, striking out 10 and walking five while giving up six hits and four earned runs. Sam Radzak pitched the final two innings. He struck out two and walked one while allowing two hits and no runs to pick up the win.

Jesse Melby had two RBIs on the night, including the game-winner, which fell between the shortstop, left fielder and center fielder to score Josh Malone.

Northwood is now 7-1 overall and 1-0 in conference.

Softball

The Northwood Evergreens softball team opened Lakeland Conference action with a 9-2 win over Shell Lake Tuesday in Minong.

For Northwood, Katie Sohn was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, Lisa Featherly had three hits and an RBI, Shelby Callaway and Amber Block had RBI singles, Annie Block had a hit and two RBIs, and Ashley Ericson and Tressa Harings had a hit each.

Haring improved to 3-0 with the pitching victory. She allowed seen hits with strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

Zoie Juza had two hits for the Lakers and Bri Stellrecht, Annie Dunham, Nikki Scheu, Jen Haack and Steph Clark added a hit apiece.

Northwood is at Cameron at 5 p.m. Thursday.
