Ash Altmann’s power-play goal with 18.2 seconds remaining gave the Duluth East Greyhounds a 4-3 win over the Superior High School boys hockey team Thursday night at the Heritage Sports Center in Duluth.
The Greyhounds led 2-0 after one period before the Spartans dominated the second period by outshooting East 13-2 and in the process taking a 3-2 lead.
Superior maintained its one-goal advantage until East’s Reed Hill scored with 6:47 remaining.

Altmann’s game-winning goal came during a five-minute power-play for East after a Superior player was given a major slashing penalty with 1:56 remaining.
Shay Donovan and Nick Altmann scored for East in the first period.
Troy Shold got Superior on the board 1:25 into the second period.
The Spartans tied the game on Beau Reder’s goal two minutes later and took a 3-2 lead when Braden LaPorte scored with assists from Matt Hinaus and Kyler Krob at 11:47. Tyler Nystrom and Jesse Polson assisted on LaPorte’s tally.
Gunnar Howg finished with 21 saves for East (1-1), and Peyton Flanders had 32 saves for Superior (1-3).
The Spartans host Chippewa Falls Tuesday and plays at Hibbing Thursday. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
SPARTANS SPIN: Superior is 15-54-1 all-time vs. Duluth East. The last time the Spartans defeated the Greyhounds was 5-2 during the 2003-04 season. Before that you have to go back to the 1990-91 season when Erik Raygor score in overtime in Superior’s 2-1 victory.
