Duluth East moves on with double OT win

ST. PAUL -- Zac Schendel scored at the 1:19 mark of the second overtime to lift No. 3 seed Duluth East past White Bear Lake 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state boys hockey tournament Thursday afternoon at the Xcel Energy Center.

With the victory, the Greyhounds advanced to face Edina in the semifinals at 6 p.m. today.

After a scoreless first period, Duluth East built a 2-0 lead on goals by Hunter Bergerson and Dom Toninato in the second period.

An even-strength and a power-play goal by Brandon Wahlin tied the score for the Bears. But Trevor Olson scored for the Greyhounds to give them a 3-2 lead at the 3:02 mark of the third period.

But Mitch Morrisette scored at the 12:37 mark to tie the score and send the game to overtime.

Edina 3, Blaine 2

ST. PAUL -- Jake Sampson and Andy Jordahl scored goals in the second period to lift No. 2 seed Edina past Blaine in the Class 2A state quarterfinals at Xcel Energy Center.

Eden Prairie 5, Lakeville North 0

ST. PAUL -- Top-seeded Eden Prairie got a pair of goals from Kyle Rau to roll past Lakeville North in the Class 2A state quarterfinals at Xcel Energy Center.

Andrew Ford had 20 saves to pick up the win in net.

Eagan 4, Moorhead 0

ST. PAUL -- Eagan added a pair of empty-net goals late.

Breck 6, New Ulm 0

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jack O'Connor had a pair of goals to lead the way as Breck rolled past New Ulm in the Class A consolation semifinals at Mariucci Arena.

It ended a rough state tournament for New Ulm, which was outscored 19-2 in two state tournament games.

Rochester Lourdes 7, Alexandria 0

MINNEAPOLIS -- Rochester Lourdes scored three power-play goals and added one short-handed en route to beating Alexandria in the Class A consolation semifinals at Mariucci Arena.

Sophomore Alex Funk and senior Andy Benner each had two goals.

Nick Heimer had 20 saves to pick up the win in net.

Ben Allen had 27 saves for the Cardinals of the Central Lakes Conference, who were outshot 34-20 and finished their season 12-17-1 overall.
