The Solon Springs/Northwood high school girls cross country team is on a roll.

Competing in the Indianhead Conference championships Thursday, Oct. 17, at Superior View Golf Course in Washburn, the Eagles won their first-ever conference title and their third meet of the season.

Solon Springs finished with 67 team points, followed closely by Mercer, 70; Ironwood, 77; and Washburn, 78.

Jade Miller was the fastest Eagle, finishing in 12th place with a time of 24 minutes, 44 seconds. Teammates Allie Nordskog, Nona Thompson and Zoe Smith finished 14-16; and Peyton Downs was 21st.

Washburn’s Sofia Borchers won the girls race in 22:08.

The Solon Springs boys were denied their fourth straight IC title with a second-place finish.

Ironwood finished first with 51 points. The Eagles, who have five team wins this season, finished with 61 points.

Solon Springs’ Owen Dickenson came up a second short in a bid to win his seventh race of the season.

Washburn’s Sam Borchers won the race in 17:28, followed by Dickenson, 17:29.

Up next for Solon Springs is the WIAA Division 3 Sectional meet Saturday, Oct. 26, at Northern Pines Golf Course in Iron River. The girls run at 1 p.m., followed by the boys at 2 p.m.

The first two teams and first five individuals not a member of a qualifying team will advance to state.

The 2019 Boys & Girls State Cross Country Championships are Saturday, Nov. 2, at Ridges Golf Course, Wisconsin Rapids.

The Eagles wrapped up conference play with a 3-0 (25-12. 25-11, 25-13) loss to the Hurly Northstars Thursday, Oct. 17, in the SSHS gym.

The Eagles were led by Jori Gehl’s five kills and Kyra Latvala’s nine set assists.

“We will continue to learn and grow and do our best as we end our season,” SSHS coach Melanie Gehl said. “They ladies have given their all. We can not count success on the scoreboard, we can as a team. What a great group of ladies both on and off the court.”

Solon Springs wrapped up the regular season at the Shell Lake Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 19.

The Eagles are the No. 15 seed for the WIAA Division 4 tournament and play at No. 2 Washburn at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The winners plays the winner of Butternut-Hurley on Thursday, Oct. 24.
