The Superior High School cross country team competed in the 69th annual Swain Cross Country Meet Saturday, Oct. 5, at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth.

The Spartans finished 12th among Class AA boys teams and 20th in Class AA girls.

Forest Lake swept individual titles with Max Charlsen winning the boys race in 17 minutes, 54.5 seconds, and Ellie Hanowski the top girl in 20:50.2.

Superior’s top finishers were Shane Leask, 28th in 19:49.7; and Savannah Leopold, 24:41.4.

The season ended for the Spartans at the WIAA Division 1 subsectional meet Monday, Oct. 7, at Menomonie.

Superior put up a battle at No. 1 and 2 doubles.

Anna Downs and Alyssa Stuart lost to Chippewa Falls’ Ashley Hanley and Alexis Zenner 6-3, 6-3; and Maya Sickler and Sydnie DeMeyer took New Richmond’s Sophie Fuchs and Brogan O’Flanagan to a tiebreaker before falling 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).

Girls swimming

The Spartans lost 51-43 Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Proctor-Hermantown.

Shelby Bresnahan had a hand in four of Superior’s five wins. Individually she won the 60 and 100 freestyle events, then teamed with Maddy Casey, Paige Booker and Molly Lenmark to win the 160 free relay and 400 free relay.

Casey picked up the fifth win in the 200 free.

Superior is at Grand rapids Friday, Oct. 11, and Duluth East Tuesday, Oct. 15. Both non-conference meets begin at 5 p.m.
