Heroes 5K

The University of Wisconsin-Superior will host the 6th annual Running for Our Heroes 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 28. The event is hosted by UW-Superior's Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center and Douglas County Veteran Services.

Registration, as well as the start and finish line, will be at the Marcovich Wellness Center, 1810 Catlin Ave.

Registration is $30 per person until Sept. 24 and $35 after. The registration fee for UWS students, military veterans and prekindergarten to 12th-grade students is $20 per person. Registration includes a T-shirt and gift bag while supplies last.

Registration is available at uwsuper.edu and from 7-8:30 a.m. the day of the race.

Prizes and awards will be presented to the top three male and female overall finishers and the top three males and females in several different age categories. There will be a raffle drawing with prizes from local and regional businesses and sports teams. Individuals that bring non-perishable food items for donation will receive an extra entry into the prize drawing.

All proceeds will benefit the Douglas County Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund as well as the UWS VNSC Emergency Fund.

Since it started, the Running for Our Heroes 5K Run/Walk has raised more than $10,000.

North End Nightmare

The inaugural North End Nightmare 5K will take place Oct. 26 in Superior.

The new, Halloween-themed 3.1 mile race will take place in conjunction with the North End Spooktacular.

The race, which is hosted by Grandma’s Marathon and the Young Athletes Foundation, is open to runners and walkers of all abilities. Participants are encouraged to dress-up as there will be a costume contest following the race.

The 5K race starts at 5 p.m. and will weave through the streets of Superior’s North End, starting and ending near the Top Hat Tavern. The two-lap course will feature Halloween-themed areas.

There will also be free Spider Dash races at 4 p.m. for kids ages 14 and under.

The early-bird registration entry fee is $25 for adults through Sept. 14. The adult price will increase to $30 on Sept. 15, and to $35 on Oct. 25. The entry fee for kids ages 6-14 is $15.

All 5K participants will receive a North End Nightmare 5K hooded sweatshirt. All kids in the Spider Dash will receive a commemorative, mummy tote bag (perfect for trick-or-treating).
