The Northwestern High School girls golf team put an end to Hayward's undefeated Heart O' North Conference season Monday at Hayward.

The Tigers shot a team score of 181 to edge the Hurricanes, shooting 187. Chetek finished in third place with a team score of 262.

"Tonight was a huge victory for our team. Hayward has dominated all season," said Stacy Burfield, NHS head coach. "They are an extremely good team and terrific competitors. My girls love to play with them because they're such wonderful athletes and good people.

"Lucy Thaler, Hayward's coach, does an excellent job coaching the girls on how to be class-act athletes."

Senior Taylor Prior tore up the course with a 41, just one stroke back from meet medalist Brittany Neff of Hayward. Prior had been out of Northwestern's lineup due to illness recently.

"It's nice to see her healthy again," Burfield said. "Taylor made a 40-foot putt and chipped one in just off the green tonight. Her short game has always been pretty solid, and today they finally dropped."

Also picking up some conference points individually for the Tigers was Jordan Lindberg, who carded a 45.

"Jordan had some trouble off the tee early on, strapping her with unwanted penalty strokes, but she fought hard to get it back," Burfield.

Rounding out Northwestern's scoring were Hayley Botten with 47, Yui Tabata with 48 and Nicolette Lindberg with a non-counting 59.

"Hayley Botten and Yui also had great rounds tonight," Burfield said. "Hayley was slamming the ball down the fairway, consistently out-driving her competitors, and Yui contributed her low score with a nice clean short game."

The Tigers may have won their latest bout with Hayward, but the Hurricanes were without their top golfer Monday for medical reasons. Hayward is expected to be back to full strength next week.

"Tonight's match may have been even closer had she been able to play," Burfield said. "We'll have to step up our game even more for the conference tournament."

The Superior High School girls golf team made short work of Cumberland Monday with a 172-216 team victory Monday.

SHS senior Janelle Strewler was the meet medalist.

"Janelle Strewler got off to a fast start with a birdie on the first hole," said SHS head coach Dan Schulz. "She followed the birdie on the first with six consecutive tap-in pars."

On the eighth hole, Strewler hit a 260-yard drive down the middle of the fairway, leaving only 160 yards on the par five. She then struck a nearly perfect eight iron to 10 feet away from the hole. Her eagle attempt came up short from dropping in the hole, but she tapped it in for an easy birdie.

Strewler finished off her round at one under par with a 35.

"Cassie Berg also played really solid with a 41 and Allison Gotelaere continued her consistent ball striking, posting a 46," Schulz said.

Anne Tracy carded a 50 for the SHS varsity golfers, and Allison Johnson finished with a non-counting 58.

The SHS JV team also won its match with Cumberland, finishing just seven strokes ahead. Superior's Abby Clemons had the low score with a 48.

The Spartans next play Monday against Ladysmith and Chetek.

"We were happy to have Taylor back in action after missing Thursday's meet in Barron due to illness," NHS coach Stacy Burfield said. "She really adds a lot to our team in terms of playing ability and leadership.

"She and Hayley had a great front nine, but the back nine proved to be a little more challenging for nearly everyone."

Other scores for Superior were Anne Tracy's 103 and Abby Clemons' 108.

"Superior shot amazingly well," Burfield said. "Hidden Greens is a difficult course for girls golf, but Superior showed otherwise.

Hibbing swept the individual titles with Sam Saccoman winning the boys race and Tatum Garrity the fastest girls.

For the Spartans, Evan Walpole finished 13th and Leah Holmes was sixth. Both are freshmen.
