Yellowjackets report: UWS wins marathon UMAC opener
The Yellowjackets grabbed the upper hand with a 15-5 fifth-set victory.
ASHLAND — Wisconsin-Superior was nearly perfect when it needed to be, accumulating only four errors over the last two sets in a marathon 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 16-25, 25-19, 15-5) Upper Midwest Athletic Conference volleyball victory at Northland on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
The Yellowjackets hit a stupendous .667 in the first set, racking up 10 kills and no errors on 15 attacks in winning 25-15, but lost the momentum in sets two and three, combining for 19 kills and 15 errors over the span to fall behind two sets to one.
However, UWS had 17 kills in the fourth set alone to even the match. After spotting the hosts the first three points of the decisive frame, the Yellowjackets posted runs of seven and six points to close it out.
Alexie Pryd and Kaylin Plautz posted 17 kills apiece in the win, with Plautz hitting .560 for the match. Colleen Claude dished out 25 assists. Defensively, Jenna Anderson totaled 23 digs, while Maiana Stark recorded four blocks.
UWS (5-7, 1-0 UMAC) plays its first conference home game of the season on Friday vs. Martin Luther.
- The Wisconsin-Superior men's soccer team's scheduled nonconference game at Macalester on Tuesday was halted around the 15-minute mark due to lightning in the Twin Cities metro area and could not be resumed. The game will be rescheduled at a later date.
