Clear Lake advances to state

The Warriors beat the Northwood Evergreens of Minong on Saturday in Superior.

The Clear Lake Warriors advanced to their first WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament in 23 years with a 59-33 win over the Northwood Evergreens of Minong on Saturday, March 7.

The Division 5 sectional final was played in the Superior High School gym.

The No. 1 Warriors will take a 26-0 record to Madison next week, while the Evergreens of Minong end the season at 20-5.

Maggie Rosen led Clear Lake with a game-high 16 points. Maddie Rosen was next with nine points and Madison Zimmer had eight.

Emme Golembiewski and Emily Berg led Northwood with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Northwood was seeking its first trip to state since 2010.

Clear Lake is the No. 2 seed for the state tournament and will play No. 3 Bangor (25-1) at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 13.

The other semifinal game is No. 1 Black Hawk (26-0) vs. No. 4 Newman Catholic (22-4) at 9 a.m.

EVERGREENS EXTRAS: Clear Lake’s march through an undefeated season included two wins over Northwood, 51-25 and 50-32. … Clear Lake won the Lakeland Central Conference with a 10-0 record. Northwood was third at 6-4. … Seniors on the Northwood roster include Kylar Shilts, Amanda Babcock and Cassidy Coons, who scored two points before fouling out. … The state tournament runs Thursday-Saturday, March 12-14, at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
