Sitek scores game-winner in OT at New Richmond

T.J. Sitek’s goal 2:31 into overtime gave the Superior High School boys hockey team a 7-6 win over the New Richmond Tigers Friday, Dec. 20, at the New Richmond Sports Center.

Sitek’s goal came on a rebound after a shot by Gunnar Hansen.

The win came a day after the Spartans lost to Duluth Denfeld 3-2 on Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Essentia Duluth Heritage Center.

Spartans 7, Tigers 6

The Spartans got two goals and an assist from Ethan Welch as they evened their record at 5-5 on the season.

G. Hansen also had a goal and two assists. His team-leading ninth goal came in the first period, which New Richmond won 2-1.


The Spartans scored four straight goals in the second period, starting with Drew Scharte’s power-play goal with assists from G. Hansen and Sean McCoshen.

Welch then scored with help from Kobe Hansen; Kaden Olson scored unassisted on the power play; and Robert Powell’s first varsity goal was assisted by McCoshen.

New Richmond stopped Superior’s run with Tucker Erickson’s power-play goal at 14:33, but Welch answered with his second goal less than a minute later.

Despite being outshot 17-8 in the third period, New Richmond scored three times to force overtime. Brock Unger’s game-tying goal came on a power play with 1:15 remaining.

Superior outshot New Richmond 3-0 in OT and Sitek’s game-winning goal was his sixth of the season.

Jamin Durfee finished with 17 saves for the Spartans and Blake Milton had 41 for the Tigers.

Up next for Superior is the Showdown in Titletown, hosted by Green Bay Notre Dame.

The Spartans open at Wausau West at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26. Games on Friday, Dec. 27 and Saturday, Dec. 28 will be played at the Cornerstone Arena in Ashwaubenon.

Hunters 3, Spartans 2

In Thursday’s loss, goals by brothers Cooper and Connor McClure 38 seconds apart in the third period completed Denfeld’s rally in the LSC victory.

The teams traded goals in the first period with Griffin Lehet scoring for Denfeld (6-2-1 overall, 1-2 LSC), and Scharte scoring for Superior (5-5, 2-1).

Sitek’s short-handed goal, with an assist from G. Hansen, was the only goal of the second period.

Cooper McClure tied it up on the power play four minutes into the third period, then assisted on his brother’s game-winner 38 second later. Lehet assisted on both goals and Dylan Jouppi helped out on the winner.

Jamin Durfee had 42 saves for Superior and Jacob Snyder stopped 28 shots for Denfeld.
