Blues win SYO tourney title

The Superior Blues won the championship of the Superior Junior Legion baseball tournament with a 7-6 victory in eight innings over Minnetonka on Sunday afternoon at Morrie Arnovich Field.

The Superior Blues won the championship of the Superior Junior Legion baseball tournament with a 7-6 victory in eight innings over Minnetonka on Sunday afternoon at Morrie Arnovich Field.

Blake Arnovich provided the winning run with a walk-off single that scored Matthew Montgomery.

Nathan Blegen pitched the first six innings for the Blues, allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk while striking out one. Brennen Werner pitched two innings of relief.

The Blues had eight hits, led by Carson Holsclaw who had a double and two singles. Tucker Johnson added two hits while Arnovich, Ben Monson and Dayne Evanson had a hit apiece.

The Blues advanced to the final by going 2-1 in their pool. They lost their opening game Duluth East then defeated Thunder Bay and Taconite.

Minnetonka advanced to the final by going 3-0 in its pool, defeating Chippewa Falls, West Duluth and International Falls.

 

Duluth East 8, Blues 3

The Blues began the tournament losing to Duluth East on Friday morning.

Sean McCoshen and Jason Samarziya pitched for the Blues, allowing only one earned run on nine hits and no walks while striking out six.

The Blues had five hits, two by Arnovich and one apiece by Holsclaw, Samarziya and Monson.

 

Blues 12, Thunder Bay 0

Superior bounced back in the second game, also on Friday, with its shutout of Thunder Bay.

Andrew Klobucher pitched a no-hitter for the Blues, allowing four walks while striking out six.

The Blues were led at the plate by Johnson’s three hits. Monson and Klobucher added two hits apiece.

 

Blues 16, Taconite 3

The Blues advanced to the final with their win over Taconite.

Brennen Werner started and pitched three shutout innings allowing only one hit while striking out four. Dylan Ronchi and Monson each pitched an inning of relief.

The Blues had eight hits, including two by McCoshen and one each by Holsclaw, Johnson, Arnovich, Samarziya, Ronchi and Evanson had one apiece.
