Beer and wine will be sold at AMSOIL Arena during all University of Minnesota Duluth men's and women's hockey games beginning in 2018-19.
This initiative is in response to growing feedback and requests from Bulldog fans over the last few years and puts UMD in line with the majority of National Collegiate Hockey Conference and multiple Western Collegiate Hockey Association venues. Currently, alcohol is served only in the suites and Champions Lodge at AMSOIL Arena.
"Availability of beer and wine at college athletic events has become quite common in recent years." UMD Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Josh Berlo said. "We are committed to being responsive to our fans and believe this will enhance our game day experience at AMSOIL Arena, while maintaining an environment grounded in fun, safe, respectful and responsible behavior."
Policies and procedures will be in place to promote responsible consumption and UMD Athletics has been working with UMD's Health Education and Student Life staff and others to implement a plan supporting a healthy fan environment at AMSOIL Arena. Plans will include restrictions on the Bulldog student section and a designated alcohol-free family friendly section.
"UMD has been very thoughtful and deliberate in this decision and we've always shared the goal of a great fan experience for everyone" DECC Executive Director Chelly Townsend said. "This will be a smooth, safe transition for Bulldog fans."
