The youth movement that started last year ramped up with the 2021 Superior Telegram All-Area Girls Basketball Team.

The 2021 incarnation has one senior, five sophomores and two freshmen compared to six seniors and four freshmen in 2020.

Four of the players — all sophomores — are back-to-back selections: Northwestern's Tieryn Plasch; Superior's Emma Raye and Savannah Leopold; and Solon Springs' Kyra Latvala.

New to the crew are senior Allison Luoma and sophomore Brynn Erickson of Northwestern; and freshmen Kloe Zentkowski and Eva Peterson of Superior.

• Led the Spartans in rebounds (94) and steals (63), was second in scoring (12.7 ppg), assists (2.3 apg) and field goal percentage (37%).

• “When Emma goes, we go, and what I mean by that is she isn't a flashy player but she hurts you in so many different ways ... She loves to compete and she loves to win," said Spartan coach Dave Kontny. "She can score from deep and she can score off the dribble from the right or left, and that makes her dangerous. One thing for sure with Emma is that when the game is on the line, you know she is going to make a play and that's what makes her special."

She went from a perimeter scorer to an overall scorer. Her ability to get to the basket really improved ... When we needed a basket, I called her number, and she just fed off the pressure and that's special. She's just figuring it all out, wait until next year."

• “A kid that can do it all and has the athleticism to go along with it. Her court sense is beyond her years already, and her work ethic is second to none," Kontny said of Zentkowski. "She is a true team player and has already become an impact player. Every opponent we played guarded her with their best defender! What does that tell you?"

Her strength to go along with her athleticism makes her a special type of player. She can play any position 1-4 and do it well. When she learns a few more offensive skills, watch out, she's going to surprise a lot of people next season."

• “Kyra is a tough, hard-working ball player. She has a nose for the ball and is able to create things offensively," Solon Springs coach Adam Bielmeier said. "She is always a threat to score. Kyra had an outstanding sophomore season leading us to a regional championship game appearance. She is a great leader and pushes her teammates to be their best. It will be exciting to see her game improve heading into her junior year."
