Northwestern High School athletes could see more fans in the stands beginning this week.

Director of athletics and activities Brian Smith said with the School District of Maple’s move back to in-person learning Jan. 4, the Board of Education has approved increasing the number of spectators at sporting events. The new crowd limits will be similar to what was allowed in the fall for volleyball games, he said.

The district will now allow spectators at 33% of seating capacity. That means up to 330 spectators will be allowed in the lower gymnasium, which seats 1,000. Smith said 100 tickets will be available to the visiting school, with the remainder going to Northwestern fans.

The new increased capacity limit was set to begin at the Jan. 5 girls basketball game against Hayward. It applies to wrestling, as well as girls and boys basketball.
