The University of Wisconsin-Superior basketball teams swept North Central at home on Saturday, Feb. 8, and the Yellowjacket hockey teams went a combined 1-2 against the UW-River Falls Falcons.

Men’s hoops

Former Superior Spartan Mason Ackley led UWS with 26 points in its 76-75 victory over the Rams at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

The Yellowjackets took the one-point lead on a pair of Allen Anderson free throws with 29 seconds remaining.

A 3-pointer at the buzzer from North Central's Micah Filer hit the back iron and UWS extended its win streak to four games and improved to 14-7 overall and 11-1 in the UMAC.

UWS also got 20 points from Vid Milenkovich, 15 from Eli Vogel, and 10 from Anderson.

Filer led the Rams (5-17, 2-10) with 22 points.

UWS plays at St. Scholastic at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Women’s hoops

UWS overcame a 35-29 halftime deficit, holding visiting North Central to just 16 points in the second half for a 63-51 victory Saturday, Feb. 8, at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Marissa Ruiz scored a career-high 22 points and Eva Reinertsen added 19 as the Yellowjackets (14-7, 10-2 UMAC) clinched a UMAC playoff berth.

North Central (9-13, 5-7) was led by Emily DeGiorgio’s 18 points.

Men’s hockey

UWS snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over UW-River Falls Thursday, Feb. 6, at Wessman Arena, but then lost to the Falcons 5-1 Saturday, Feb. 8, in River Falls.

Leading 2-1 Thursday, the Yellowjackets took a two-goal lead when Troy York scored into an empty net with 2:14 remaining.

Things got interesting in the final minute with UWRF pulled its goalie again and Ryan Cusin picked off a clearing attempt and scored with 37 seconds remaining.

UWS held to improve to 13-7-3 overall and 6-7 in the WIAC.

The Yellowjackets led 2-1 after one period on goals by Dylan Johnson and Jonny Pace.

Trey Bagwell scored for the Falcons.

Myles Hektor had 19 saves for UWS and Zach Quinn stopped 30 shots for UWRF.

On Saturday, Ty Proffitt pulled UWS into a 1-1 tie early in the first period, but the Falcons scored the next four goals to improve to 14-6-3 overall and 6-5-2 in the WIAC.

UWS wraps up the regular season with a home-and-home series with UW-Stout. The teams play Thursday, Feb. 13 in Menomonie, then Saturday, Feb. 15, at Wessman Arena. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m.
