The Northwestern High School boys basketball team pulled away from the Bloomer Blackhawks for a 65-45 Heart O’ North Conference victory Thursday, Feb. 6, in Maple.
The Tigers held a slim 31-30 lead at the half, gradually built a 45-41 lead early in the second half, and outscored the Blackhawks 20-4 over the remainder of the game to improve to 12-5 overall and 9-3 in the HON.
Harrison Nelson and Jake Brill were the Tigers’ high scorers with 12 points apiece. Jagar Stillson was next with 11 points and Nolan Gustafson had nine points on three 3-pointers.
Brill also led theTigers with eight rebounds and eight assists; Carson Nykanen had seven points and seven rebounds; and Nelson had four assists.
Austin Thur and Charles Herrick led Bloomer (7-8, 5-7) with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Bloomer opened a 13-6 lead on a Herrick 3-pointer six minutes into the game.
The Tigers eventually tied it up 15-15, but the Blackhawks took a 21-15 lead on a pair of Thur 3-pointers.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Gustafson and Brill gave Northwestern its first lead of the game, 26-24, with 3:11 left in the first half.
After the game was tied again at 26-26, a Gustafson 3-pointer and Brill put-back basket gave Northwestern a 31-30 lead at the intermission.
The Tigers are at Hayward on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and host Chetek-Weyerhaeuser on Friday, Feb. 14. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.
