The Northwestern High School basketball teams had mixed success against the Cumberland Beavers last week.

The Tiger girls easily won their season-opener 69-19 at Cumberland on Thursday, Dec. 5, but the NHS boys lost to the Beavers 80-67 at home Friday, Dec. 6.

Girls hoops

The Tigers got scoring from 12 players, led by Tieryn Plasch’s 12 points. Karsyn Jones, Brooke Ogren and Gracie Altman were next with eight points each.

Mecina Garibaldi led Cumberland (0-3) with nine points.

The Tigers host Spooner on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and play at Ladysmith on Friday, Dec. 13. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.

The Tigers trailed by just four points at the half, but were outscored 33-24 in the second half.

Koy Nelson led Northwestern with 22 points, which included five 3-point baskets. Jagar Stillson was also in double figures with 12 points on four 3-pointers.

Jack Martens and Noah Schradle scored 33 and 23 points, respectively, for Cumberland (1-1).

The Tigers then fell to 0-3 with an 87-52 loss at home to Merrill on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Maple.

Stillson led Northwestern with nine points on three 3-pointers.

The Tigers play at Rice Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and Spooner on Thursday, Dec. 12. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.
