The Superior High School girls basketball team fell to 1-2 on the season with a 61-40 loss at Esko on Friday, Dec. 6.

The Spartans, who were slow out of the gate and trailed 38-13 at the half, were led by Savannah Leopold and Izzy Swanson led the Spartans with eight points apiece. Emma Raye was next with seven.

Kristy DeMuth led Esko with 25 points.

“The bottom line is we just didn't come ready to play,” SHS coach Dave Kontny said. “I thought we got out hustled and Esko, plain and simple, out-worked us. They got offensive rebounds, they got to every loose ball, they were go, go, go, and we got caught watching.

“It’s OK. It’s a learning experience for a young team, but with our schedule we are going to have to grow up fast because there is no easy games on it.”

Superior plays at Proctor at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, and at Cloquet at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14.

“Proctor is by far the conference favorite and Cloquet will also be tough,” Kontny said. “We have a lot of things to shore up but I am confident in our kids, they come to practice everyday ready to get better.”
