The University of Wisconsin-Superior women's basketball team enjoyed a weekend trip to the East coast that included a first-place finish in the Max Ziel Women's Basketball Tournament, which was hosted by Oswego (N.Y.) State on Friday, Nov. 15, and Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Yellowjackets used a 28-point third quarter to separate from Clarkson and eventually defeated the Golden Knights 77-50 in the championship game at Max Ziel Gymnasium.
Eva Reinertsen led UWS with game highs of 15 points and six assists, while Pashia Scott added 11 points. Both were named to the all-tournament team, with Reinertsen named the tournament MVP.
The 'Jackets (2-2) also got nine points from former Superior Spartan Ellie Leadstrom, and eight from Marissa Ruiz. Leadstrom also had a career-best 10 rebounds and Ruiz had four assists.
Leading 29-22 at the half, UWS hit on 10-of-15 attempts in the third quarter, including 4-of-6 on 3-pointers. Reinertsen’s third quarter included six points, two assists and two rebounds.
In Friday’s semifinal, the Yellowjackets held Oswego State to 15 first-half points and routed the Lakers 77-49.
The Yellowjackets led 48-15 at the break and cruised from that point. UWS' Emily Carpenter scored 14 points, Ruiz had 13 points and Scott had 12.
Reinertsen had seven rebounds and she had five assists and Carpenter had four. Scott and Mady Sanders each grabbed four boards.
The 'Jackets play at ninth-ranked St. Thomas (St. Paul) Wednesday, Nov. 20, and at St. Benedict (St. Joseph, Minn.) Thursday, Nov. 21. Both nonconference games begin at 7 p.m.
