The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s basketball team advanced to the championship game of the 10th annual Merrill Thompson Classic with a 60-55 win over Marian Friday night at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
The Yellowjackets (1-0) will now face Nebraska Wesleyan in the title game at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Nebraska Wesleyan (1-0) advanced with a 78-56 win over St. John's.
Vid Milenkovic led Superior with 18 points and nine rebounds. Mac Reykdal added 16 points and Allen Anderson had 14 points and three assists.
Marian (0-1) got 14 points from Justin Wilson and 13 apiece from Logan Hamilton and DeAndre Ross.
The game was tied 27-27 at the half.
Marian and St. John's play in the third-place game at 3 p.m.
UWS opened its season with a 7-0 win over St. Mary's Friday night at Wessman Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Yellowjackets scored three times in the second period and four more times in the third.
UWS got goals from seven different players — Ty Proffitt, Andrew Durham, Chad Lopez, Artur Terchiyev, Will Blake, Coltyn Bates and Troy MacTavish.
Oscar Svensson pitched the shutout with 20 saves. Nick Nast andAl Rogers combined on 31 saves for St. Mary's.
UWS hosts St. Olaf at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.
UWS scored twice in the final 20 seconds of the third period to pull into a 2-2 tie with the Hamline Pipers Friday at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
The Yellowjackets and Pipers then skated through a scoreless five-minute overtime session in non-conference action.
Taylor Stefan gave Hamline a 2-0 lead with 50 seconds remaining.
Kaleigh Martinson cut the lead in half for Superior 30 seconds later, and Jenna Curtis tied it up with 5 seconds remaining.
The Yellowjackets (2-0-1) got 29 saves from Catherine Johnson and two from Maddy Gamst.
Jaela O'Brien stopped 24 shots for Hamline (0-1-1).
Molly Garin scored Hamline's first goal just 30 seconds into the game.
