The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s basketball team opened it season with a 77-65 exhibition loss to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on Monday, Nov. 4, at Romano Gym in Duluth.
Alex Illikainen, a former Wisconsin Badger and 6-foot-9 forward from Grand Rapids, had 18 points, eight rebounds and two steals to lead UMD past UWS Monday before a crowd of 875.
Teammate, and former Superior Spartan, Brandon Myer led all scorers with 19 points.
Both teams shot 50% with UMD going 28-of-55 and racking up 26 rebounds, and UWS shooting 23-46 and grabbing 30 rebounds.
Mac Reykdal led the Yellowjackets with 18 points, followed by Allen Anderson, 15 points, and Vid Milenkovic, 14.
Former Spartan Mason Ackley also helped the Yellowjackets’ cause with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting, which included a 3-pointer.
UWS will host the Merrill Thompson Classic this weekend.
Semifinal games on Friday, Nov. 8, are Nebraska Wesleyan vs. St. John's at 6 p.m., followed by UWS and Marian at 8 p.m. The losers will play at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, followed by the winners at 5 p.m.
The Yellowjackets' home-opener is against Augsburg at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11.
UMD opens its regular season in Bethany, Okla., in the GIAC/NSIC Crossover, taking on Southern Nazarene (Friday, Nov. 8) and Southeastern Oklahoma State (Saturday, Nov. 9).
’JACKET JOTTINGS: UMD is 22-1 all-time against UWS, with the one loss coming on Nov. 24, 2009. … UMD defeated UWS 85-45 last season.
