The Northwestern High School boys and girls basketball teams swept the Ashland Oredockers in non-conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

The Tigers boys won at Ashland, 62-56, while the girls won at home, 70-45.


Boys hoops

Sam Risley led the NHS boys with 21 points.

Both teams scored early and often early in the first half before Northwestern eventually opened up a 30-16 lead.

The Oredockers cut the lead to 35-25, which was followed by the Tigers calling a timeout.

Jagar Stillson scored after the break for the Tigers and the Dockers scored the final four points of the half to cut Northwestern’s lead to 37-29.

Ashland scored the first four points of the second half and eventually tied the game at 45 and 47 before the Tigers took the lead for good at 49-47.

Risley, who was 13-of-16 from the free-throw line, helped sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with 13.6 seconds remaining.

The Tigers (14-2) host Bloomer at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

NHS is in first place in the Heart O’ North Conference at 10-0, followed by Bloomer (12-2) at 9-1.

Northwestern then plays at Merrill at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.

Girls hoops

Mac Correll topped the Tiger girls with 15 points, all coming on 5-of-6 shooting on 3-pointers.

Karsyn Jones also had 13 points for the Tigers, now 13-5 on the season.

Maddy Cabe led the Oredockers (7-11) with 11 points.

Northwestern, which hosted Cumberland Thursday, Feb. 7, wrap up the regular season at Ladysmith on Friday, Feb. 15.
