Ladysmith rallies past NHS girls

The Ladysmith Lumberjills rallied past the Northwestern High School girls basketball team 45-38 Friday, Jan. 4, in Maple.

The Tigers led 13-4 early on and 22-19 at the half, but the Lumberjills battled back and eventually took its their first lead with about three minutes into the second half.

Ladysmith eventually opened up a 41-30 lead before Northwestern caught fire and made it a 41-38 game on two Jayda Klobucher free throws with 1:55 remaining.

The Tigers wouldn’t any closer as Emma Dieckman sealed the victory for Ladysmith with four free throws in the final 43 seconds.

Dieckman finished with a game-high 20 points with Brittney Wiles adding 10.

Brooke Ogren led the Tigers with 10 points. Klobucher and Kasha Huglett both added eight points and Karsyn Jones had seven.

Northwestern falls to 9-2 overall while Ladysmith is 7-4. Both teams are 5-2 in the Heart O’ North Conference.

The Tigers play at Rice Lake Tuesday, Jan. 8, and host Chetek Thursday, Jan. 10. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.

TIGER TALES: Northwestern honored the 1999 girls basketball team on the 20th anniversary of its advancing to program’s only WIAA State Tournament. The Tigers (23-2) lost to Viroqua 50-46 in the semifinals. Team members included seniors Billie Jo Braatz, Jody Peterson, Kelly Taipale, Kim Taipale and Jessica Leith; juniors Adrienne Jondreau, Aly Klugow, Crystal Smith, Stephanie Janigo, Stephanie Krivinchuk and Breena Lind; and sophomores Paige Bratland, Kate McDonald and Karilyn Rask. The head coach was Ken Bartelt and his assistants were Andy Lind and Steve Gustafson and the team managers were Haley Learn, Amanda Blade, Krista Lillo and Angie Vee.
