The Northwestern High School girls and boys basketball teams remained undefeated with wins last week.
The Tiger girls improved to 5-0 with a 50-40 win at Hayward on Friday, Dec. 7, while the NHS boys are 3-0 after a 63-43 win over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser on Thursday, Dec. 6, in Maple.
The Tiger opened fast, jumping to a 7-0 lead over the Hurricanes.
That lead evaporated and Hayward took a 14-12 lead midway through the first half. The Canes eventually took a 22-21 lead into the locker room at the the intermission.
Northwestern came out fast again in the second half, scoring two quick buckets and grabbing a lead they would maintain until Hayward tied it up at 37-37 with 6:22 remaining.
The Tigers defense then held Hayward scoreless for more than five minutes and eventually won by 10 points.
Kennedy Nelson led the Tigers in scoring with 10 points. Brooke Ogren added nine points and seven rebounds.
“We played well and got a big win,” NHS coach Paul Eberhardt said. “It was a good test for us.”
Defending HON co-champion Hayward falls to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the HON.
The Tigers (3-0 HON) travel to Barron on Tuesday, Dec. 11, and host the other defending HON co-champ Bloomer on Friday, Dec. 14. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.

Brody Payton led the Tigers with 17 points, followed closely by Sam Risley’s 14 points and 11 by Jake Brill.
Kyle Bilodeau led the Bulldogs (0-4) with 15 points.
The Tigers host Rice Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 11, and plays at Spooner on Thursday, Dec. 13. Both HON Conference games begin at 7:15 p.m.
