The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's basketball team went 1-1 in its own season-opening Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic over the weekend at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

After the 79-63 win over Finlandia on Friday, Nov. 9, the Yellowjackets lost to Lawrence 74-62 on Saturday, Nov. 10.

UW-Stout went 2-0 in the tournament with wins over Lawrence (79-74 OT) and Finlandia (84-65).

In Superior's win Friday, Montroy Scott scored 26 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and dished off six assists to lead UWS.

Scott made 10-of-21 field goals and all four of his free-throw attempts. Teammate Mac Reykdal poured in 23 points on 8-for-15 shooting, including 4-for-9 from 3-point range, and Andrew McGill chipped in a dozen points.

UWS made 7 of 26 shots from distance and held the Lions to 25-for-66 overall shooting.

Four players scored in double figures for Finlandia, led by Kevin Straih and Tyler Browner with 13 apiece.

That momentum ended Saturday with a loss against Lawrence.

Three UWS players scored double figures and shot 56.5 percent from the field in the first half, but visiting Lawrence used a 40-point second half to top the Yellowjackets in the final game of the Merrill Thompson Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Scott, a senior, scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Superior. Classmate Colton Williams recorded 13 points and eight boards of his own while sophomore Ronny Galvan added 11 points, two rebounds and two assists.

Lawrence shot 53.2 percent for the game on 25-of-47 from the field and put four players in double digits, improving to 1-1 on the season after falling to UW-Stout on Friday.

Superior returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Hamline. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.
