The Northwestern High School girls’ basketball team defeated Barron 61-32 Thursday in Barron.

With the score tied 4-4, Tiger senior Katie Lundeen drained a 3-point shot and sophomore guard Kennedy Nelson followed with seven straight points to stretch the lead to 14-4.

It was all Northwestern after that as coach Rich Windt’s team played one of its best games of the year.

Lundeen, fresh off scoring her 1,000th career point on Jan. 23, led the team with 20 points. Nelson filled up the stat sheet with nine points, seven assists and four steals, Kesha Hughlett scored 10 points and Mac Correll scored eight.

“We have come back well after our loss to Hayward,” Windt said. “Tuesday against Washburn, and tonight, we really did what we wanted.

“Our girls were patient, taking good shots and sharing the ball. We have big games coming up and are trying to get ready for that.”

The Tigers (11-6) play at Chetek tonight and host Bloomer Friday.

TIGER TALES: NHS also got six points from Sam Hoegan, four from Sydney Anderson, and two each from Karsyn Jones and Brooke Ogren.

Boys basketball

Northwestern lost 67-50 Friday night at Hayward.

The game was very close in the first half with the score tied six times and the lead changing hands five times.

Hayward lead 30-28 at half with Kade Bartelt scoring 14 of the Tigers’ points.

Hayward maintained a small lead in the second half and led 41-38 with 9:07 to play.

From that point they slowly stretched the lead and used free throws to provide a comfortable final margin.

Bartelt finished with 25 points. Jeffrey McClure was next with six points, followed by Anthony Lupa, five; Jake Brill and Greg Ruhman, three each; and Brody Payton, Jenner Graff and Gervase Thompson, two each.

Phil Ziegle lead Hayward with 20 points.

The Tigers (9-7, 7-3 HON), host Ashland tonight and Barron Thursday. Ashland beat Northwestern by 20 points and Northwestern beat Barron by two in December action.

The Tigers lost to Cumberland 46-33 in the HON dual meet Friday night in Cumberland.

Northwestern won six matches, including five by pins.

Tigers winning by pin were Morgan Berggren (285); Abby Nelson (106), Calen Kirkpatrick (138), Zach Pooler (145), Donny Pooler (170), and Andrew Hanson (182).

Up next for the Tigers are the HON championships Saturday at Bloomer.
