SPARTAN ROUND-UP: SHS hoop teams sweep East

Superior High School swept a basketball doubleheader from the Duluth East Greyhounds Thursday evening in Duluth.

The Spartan girls began the evening with a 39-22 win and the night ended with the SHS boys coming out on top 59-51.

The Spartans won a defensive battle with the Greyhounds thanks to some key shooting from the free-throw line where they were 16-of-20.

“Our free-throw shooting was the best we have shot all season and we needed it,” SHS coach Dave Kontny said. “I thought we played well on offense over the final seven minutes of the game. Up to that point we had a lot of chances to open the game up, but that’s basketball.”

Madisen Myer and Chloe Kintop were in double figures for Superior with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

East (1-15) was led by Shay Callaway’s six points.

“Defensively we gave them problems all night but give East credit, they are young and they played hard right to the end,” Kontny said. “We looked sluggish early and we have been dealing with a lot of health issues as are a lot of teams this season. But I thought once we started being more patient we got some nice passing and nice basket cuts that led to some very good looks for points.”

The Spartans (8-7) don’t have much to celebrate as they host Eau Claire North (6-9) at 7:15 p.m. tonight (Friday).
