Spartans fall to the Huskies

The Eau Claire North Huskies improved to 12-2 with a 70-50 win over the Superior High School boys basketball team Tuesday night in the SHS gym.

The Huskies were ice cold at the beginning of the game, missing at least their first nine shots and leading just 3-2 five minutes into the game.

ECN eventually found its range and went on to make six 3-pointers over the remainder of the first half and take a 35-24 lead into the intermission.

The Huskies’ largest lead of over the opening 18 minutes was 29-16 on one of Jack Kron’s three 3-pointers.

A three-point play by Cam Borgh and a basketball and free throw by Mason Ackley got the Spartans within 31-22 with 1:42 on the clock. The half ended with a Dalton Banks 3-pointer and two Ackley free throws.

The Huskies eventually took a pair of 18-point leads early in the second half, including 48-30 on a Kron basket with about 14 minutes remaining.

Two 3-pointers and a 2-pointer by Ackley got the Spartans within 50-40 with 9:50 remaining, but ECN scored the next seven points and eventually took a 62-45 lead on a Noah Hanson 3-pointer.

After Superior’s Corey Sanders scored the next five points to get the Spartans within 62-50, North scored the final six points of the game.

Banks led the Huskies with 26 points with Kron and Hanson adding 13 points apiece. ECN finished with nine 3-point baskets, including three apiece from Banks and Hanson.

Ackley led the Spartans with 22 points. Sanders and Xavier Patterson were next with eight points apiece.

The Spartans (4-8) play at Duluth East Thursday and Cloquet Friday. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.

SPARTAN SPIN: ECN is also in first place in the Big Rivers Conference with a 5-2 record. … Superior won the JV game 55-51. The Spartans (5-6) were led by Jarrett Gronski’s 15 points. Barker added 14 points and Willem McClellan had 11.
