The Northwestern High School boys basketball team went 1-1 over the weekend, defeating the Ladysmith Lumberjacks 50-36 at home Friday night, then losing 81-56 to the St. Croix Central Panthers Saturday in Hammond.

The Tigers used a strong first half to defeat the Lumberjacks. With neither team able to gain command early on, and with the score tied 10-10, Northwestern scored the next 26 points for a 36-10 lead at halftime.

Ladysmith outscored Northwestern 26-14 in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

“It was a tale of two halves — we did what we wanted in the first half, but struggled in the second,” NHS coach Steve Lahti said. “Give Ladysmith credit, they really hustled in the second half. It was a nice win for us though.”

Junior forward Brody Payton led the Tigers with 19 points and five steals. Kade Bartelt added 12 points and five assists; and Anthony Lupa hit three 3-pointers for nine points.

Ladysmith (2-9, 1-6) was led by Peyton Rogers’ 17 points.

Northwestern fell to 7-6 on the season with its loss to the SCC Panthers.

The Tigers are also 5-2 in the Heart O’ North Conference and tied for second place with Hayward, which lost to Bloomer Friday night.

The Tigers host Chetek-Weyerhaueser (2-4 HON) at 7:15 p.m. Friday. It will also be RBA Night with all Rookie Basketball Association players recognized at halftime.
